Ancient Astronomers had to rely on their eyes to observe the sun, and twice a year it looked like it was indeed standing still. So, they named it sol stice (sol = sun and stice = stop). Literally: Sun Standing Still. During the winter solstice In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun is at its farthest point from the Earth; yet during the summer solstice, it's at its closest point, literally showing us how Yin and Yang work in our daily lives. We use this time of darkness as one of deep introspection, a time to acknowledge the beauty of the constant light within, as well as owning our power when we shine our light out! The exact time of the winter solstice in North America is 2:48 PM MST.
